Earth will be awakened for Boston Shines on Saturday

Chief Kenny Black Elk, aka Kenneth Barber, and the Greater Four Corners Action Coalition are planning an “Earth Awakening” at Geneva Cliffs this weekend.

“We give thanks to the earth, thanks to the moon and of course we give thanks to the creator,” said Barber. “We do a tobacco ceremony and after we dance and rejoice.”

Native drumming, arts and crafts, a scavenger hunt and a cook out are also on the agenda. Members of a number of Native American tribes will be on hand in full regalia, including a direct descendent of Massasoit, the fellow who, in the early 1600s, helped ensure the survival of the Plymouth Colony, according to English sources.

The event begins at noon on Saturday at Geneva Cliffs on the corner of Bowdoin and Geneva avenues.
