Kevin McCrea set to announce Mayor run

Kevin McCrea, a self-described goo-goo (good governance advocate) who successfully sued City Council for violating the Open Meeting Law, is scheduled to announce his candidacy for mayor tonight at a private home on St. Mark's Road.

"I'm running to end the waste, fraud and abuse at city hall that's preventing us from having safe streets to walk on, designing an exemplary school system for all our children, and not wasting our tax dollars," said McCrea in a phone interview Tuesday.

Although he will likely be considered the long, long shot in a race where many observers decry the fact that a mayoral incumbent hasn't lost since 1949, McCrea definitely has a knack for stirring up debate. He recently began writing a column for the South End News, which according to McCrea at least, is already irking the mayor's office.

"After just two columns written the Mayor's people have already contacted my editors to complain about my columns, and to complain that I am contacting City Hall and asking for information!" McCrea wrote in one of his recent blog posts.

McCrea seems to leave no city pol out of his line of fire. His "the Big Campaign" blog at electkevin.blogspot.com is filled with detailed criticism of Mayor Thomas Menino's administration and several City Council members.

McCrea's blog also played a part in his failed bid for a City Council at-Large seat in 2005, as did his construction company Wabash Construction, which loaned his campaign $200,000.
