Two alleged pot distributors arrested on Port Norfolk street; one also charged with littering

One of two men arrested on charges of marijuana distribution Thursday afternoon was also formally charged with littering after police allegedly spotted him dumping a bale of pot on a Port Norfolk street near the end of a car chase that began in downtown Boston on Newbury Street in the Back Bay, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Rudolph Lawrence, 35, and Kareem Muhammed, 27, will also face charges related to the Norinco SKS 7.62 caliber assault rifle with a folding stock, a high-capacity magazine for the rifle, and 99 rounds of ammunition investigators found at a Franklin Street apartment to which Rudolph had the keys, the District Attorney's office says.

According to the DA's office, police and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents had staked out the UPS store at 304 Newbury St. Thursday to see who would pick up five, 49-lb. boxes they believed contained marijuana. Around 5 p.m., Lawrence and Muhammed showed up, signed for the boxes and drove off in a BMW 320i. Police tried to stop them, but they sped off, the DA's office says.

They got all the way to Tenean Street, where officers spotted Muhammed open the passenger door and dump out one of the boxes, the DA's office says. When the car blew a tire on Walnut Street, the pair got out and tried but failed to outrun officers.

At their arraignment in Boston Municipal Court, both were ordered held in lieu or $750,000 bail on charges of trafficking in more than 100 lbs of marijuana and resisting arrest. Muhammed did not receive any higher bail because of the littering.

Even if they could raise the money, they'd still be held in jail - both were already on bail for earlier charges; Lawrence for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and Muhammed on an illegal-weapons possession charge.
