May 3 meeting to take up Neponset canoe launch plan

A discussion about the expansion of the canoe launch dock at Neponset Park for Milton High School’s crew team and the surrounding community will take place at a public meeting at St. Brendan’s Church Hall on Tues., May 3, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The extension is being proposed by the Friends of Milton Crew with a partnership grant from the Department of Conservation and Reservation (DCR), with the purpose of providing better access to the river for the public. This meeting is intended to provide a public hearing for the neighborhood to inform them of the groups’ plans and offer an open forum for discussion.

According to the Friends of Milton Crew, the wooden dock that is currently in place at the park extends only partly down to the water and fails to reach the edge at all during low tide. The group intends to build the dock farther out in order to launch rowing boats and to “help anybody launch anything independent of the tide situation,” said Friends of Milton Crew member Frank Schroth. This includes any boats that can “sit on a car-top,” like canoes and kayaks. Milton Crew would also be utilizing the dock weekday afternoons in the fall and spring to launch their boat shells.
