A three-alarm fire that broke out around 3 a.m. on Tuesday at 40 Westwind Rd. left an elderly man dead and sent four residents and one firefighter to the hospital, the Boston Fire Department reports. Two MBTA buses were brought in to shelter other residents until they could return to their apartments or find alternate housing.

The fire, confined to a single fourth-floor apartment, did an estimated $250,000 in damage, the department says. The cause of the fire remains under investigation; an autopsy is planned on the dead resident.

The injured residents suffered smoke inhalation, the firefighter a shoulder problem, the department says.
