More student assignment meetings scheduled

School district officials are planning additional public meetings as they work to revamp the student assignment process. According to Boston Public Schools, 2,000 people have already participated in meetings and online.

A new website – bostonschoolchoice.org – was launched this week to ease engagement. The feedback will be used in the student assignment overhaul. A draft proposal will be released in the fall, and the school committee will likely vote on a plan in winter 2013.

“As families get ready for summer break, we are encouraged that three times as many people have participated in our community engagement this spring as did in 2004,” Mayor Thomas Menino said in a statement. “This website is a one-stop shop to help continue and expand the conversation throughout the summer and fall.”

Menino and Superintendent Carol Johnson are expected to attend one of the public meetings this week, scheduled for Sunday, June 24, at 1 p.m. in the St. Peter’s Parish Teen Center on Bowdoin St.

The other two meetings are slated for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, at the Ohrenberger School in West Roxbury, and at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, at the O’Bryant School of Math and Science in Roxbury.
