Polls open in 12th Suffolk special primary

Polls open at 7 a.m. in a special state primary for the 12th Suffolk House District. With Linda Dorcena Forry taking a seat in the state Senate, the vacancy has drawn a number of Democratic and independent candidates.

Three Democrats are on the ballot in the Aug. 13 primary: Dan Cullinane, a former aide to state Rep. Marty Walsh and former City Councillor Maureen Feeney; Stephanie Everett, a former aide to state Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz; and Mary Tuitt, an aide to state Rep. Gloria Fox who has served in the Navy. Ruthella Logan-Cruz, a Democrat, is waging a write-in campaign.

The winner of the primary will face off against two independents in the Sept. 10 general special election: Lincoln Larmond of Mattapan and Edmond Romulus of Milton.

The district, which has parts of Dorchester, Mattapan and Hyde Park, includes Ward 16’s Precincts 8 and 11, Ward 17’s Precincts 4 and 10 through 14, and Ward 18’s Precincts 1 through 6 and Precinct 21. The district also includes two precincts in Milton.

The 12th Suffolk seat was once held by Thomas Finneran, a Mattapan Democrat who served as speaker of the state House of Representatives.

The polls close at 8 p.m.
