Cullinane wins Democratic nomination in 12th Suffolk; Tompkins cruises to big win

State Rep. Dan Cullinane has been nominated for re-election in the 12th Suffolk district after defeating three opponents in one of the city's rare contested legislative seats. Cullinane, who won a special election last year to succeed now Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry, will win today's contest decisively, with about 62 percent of the vote, according to his campaign.

Sheriff Steve Tompkins is another big winner, according to preliminary results. It is the first electoral victory for Tompkins, who was appointed sheriff to replace Andrea Cabral in 2012. Tompkins won more than 60 percent of the vote across Suffolk County and scored big victories in Boston on the way to a decisive victory over Doug Bennett, who lives in Dorchester.

Results in statewide contests are not yet official, but Martha Coakley and Deb Goldberg were consistently posting clear victories in Dorchester polling places as returns came in to the Reporter newsroom tonight. Maura Healey and Warren Tolman were battling in a tight race in the neighborhood, but Healey was showing more strength citywide.
