Eagle Scout candidate builds kiosk in Cedar Grove Cemetery

Cameron Gross, 17, wants to be an Eagle Scout. The Weymouth resident, who is a member of Troop 28 based at Savin Hill’s Rice Post, must complete a community service project to achieve the rank. So, this summer he sought and won permission from the board of Cedar Grove Cemetery to build and install a new kiosk at the historic cemetery on Adams Street. Gross finished the installation over the weekend with help from his father, Chris, and other friends.

“I wanted to do a project close to home,” said Gross, who added that his grandparents are buried at Cedar Grove.

The kiosk includes a brief history of the cemetery, which was dedicated in 1868. It also has a map and a place where cemetery administrators can post notices, including a list of rules for visitors to observe.

The project, he said, was facilitated by Bill Sorel, the scoutmaster at Troop 28, Joe Barry, who is the troop‘s chairman, and by his own dad, Chris, who is a leader with the scout pack and a Cedar Grove Baseball coach.

“Cameron came up with the idea and put together a presentation,” said Chris Gross. “He is going to 18 soon and when push came to shove, he was committed and wanted to do whatever he could to get the project done.”
