New storage building under construction in Neponset

A new 100,000 square foot, five-story storage building is under construction aty the corner of Norwood and Conley streets in Neponset this summer. The structure — rising along the MBTA tracks near Tenean Beach— will soon house Dorchester Great Space, an enterprise co-owned by partners Edward Ahern, Ken Goldberg and Charlie Sample. Ahern, a Dorchester resident and builder, says that the construction should be completed this fall with a prospective opening in November. Timberline Construction is the contractor that is building the structure.

Ahern said that the permits for the storage building were secured in 2007, but that the partners decided to wait until the economy was more secure to begin construction.

“The demand for storage units is much higher than I ever knew,” said Ahern. “All of the existing storage companies around here are 96 percent full all the time.”

The storage facility replaces a defunct electrical supply warehouse that once occupied the site.
