Police: Assault charges pending after racially charged fight at Garvey

A racially charged argument between teenagers hanging out at Garvey Park ended violently last Saturday night when a 19 year old was slashed in the face with a knife. Boston Police detectives from Area C-11 are investigating the incident— which resulted in non-life threatening injuries to the victim— and charges are expected to be filed in the case, according to Boston Police spokesman Sgt. Michael McCarthy.

Police were called to the park around 9:30 p.m. after the stabbing. Witnesses told police that an argument — which included an exchange of “racial epithets” between two young men, one white and one black— led to a physical altercation that was broken up by other witnesses. One of the combatants left the park, but told the group that he would be back with a “crew.” According to the police report, the teen did return about 30 minutes later with his brother and a second man— described as in their early twenties— and each brandishing a knife, according to witnesses. The injured party, a 19-year-old man, was punched and slashed in the cheek. He was transported to Boston Medical Center.

Sgt. McCarthy said that the BPD’s Community Disorders Unit was investigating the incident, but that no civil rights charges were expected to be filed.

The father of a six year-old boy who died last Thursday morning under mysterious circumstances took his own life two days later when Boston Police came to question him. Patrick Marcelin was wanted for questioning in the death of his son, who was found in cardiac arrest at 61 Devon St. Marcelin was located at a friend’s apartment at 815 Morton St. on Saturday.
