State officials warn of expressway detours next Tuesday-Wednesday

A key stretch of the northbound expressway will be closed off for road repairs overnight next Tuesday into Wednesday between South Bay and Haymarket— prompting detours onto local streets.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation's (DOT) put out a news release today that said the closure will start at midnight on Tuesday, May 6 and last until Wednesday, May 7 at 5 a.m.

"I-93 NORTHBOUND traffic will be detoured off of the expressway at Exit 16, Southampton Street., and directed along surface streets. The detour will allow traffic to re-enter I-93 NB at the Haymarket on-ramp. Traffic destined for Route 1 Northbound (Tobin Bridge) should stay on the surface streets and access the Route 1 NB on-ramp in City Square.

"Maintenance crews, contractors, along with State and Boston Police will begin set-up for the closure on Tuesday evening at 11pm. The full closure will begin at midnight on Wednesday and last until 5am Wednesday morning.

"Work to be performed includes: tunnel wall and sign washing, drain clearing and maintenance, as well as maintenance of electrical and communications systems."
