Nelson Miranda, a lifelong resident of Uphams Corner, is the new Director of Diversity at Boston College High School. Miranda, who graduated from BC High in 1992, also holds an undergraduate degree from Boston College and a Masters from Boston College School of Education.

Miranda’s parents emigrated from Cape Verde in the early 1960s and imparted on their 7 children —Nelson is the only son— the value of hard work and a great education. The Miranda children witnessed firsthand their parents practicing what they preached; their father juggled multiple jobs and at times night classes and their mother, a stay at home mom, worked in unison to provide the essentials of everyday life.
His love of learning began at St. Kevin’s Elementary School in Dorchester, where Miranda met Serge Georges and Ben Sealy, both seniors from BC High that volunteered as tutors at St. Kevin’s.

“They were different. We had the same color of skin, but they behaved differently than all of my friends,” remembers Miranda. “We all wanted to be like the BC High boys that came every week to work with us.”

As Director of Diversity, Miranda acts as a resource, leader and guide and is eager to build on the rich foundation of his predecessor, fellow Dorchester resident Barbara O’Brien-Miller. By developing programs, events and resources with the administration, faculty, guidance, admissions, parents’ groups, students’ groups, that will support the needs of under-represented students.

“Nelson possesses a demonstrated history of success working both independently and as part of a team,” said BC High Principal Steve Hughes, also a Dorchester resident. “His proven ability to collaborate and work successfully with multiple constituents to deliver and improve programs and initiatives will only help him in his new role.”
