AG Healey hears from community at Yawkey Center

Attorney General Maura Healey hosted her second session of Community Action Hours last Thursday. About 100 people showed up to the session, which took place through the Catholic Charities of Greater Boston at the Haitian Multi Service Center in Dorchester, according to her office.

The event was an opportunity for residents to familiarize themselves with the attorney general’s office. Many do not know the full range of services available to them, a spokesperson for Healey said.

Mediators, assistant attorneys general, and Healey herself were on site to assist and meet the community. The first of the community action hours took place in Roxbury, and additional sessions were planned for Lawrence, Roxbury again, Framingham, Brockton, Chelsea, and Stoughton.

Healey’s office hopes for a response similar to that of the Roxbury community hours. Many Roxbury participants later followed up with the office, according to Healey’s staff.

Among the most common concerns raised were workers rights issues, overtime pay, non-payment issues, and discrimination. Given confidentiality constraints, specifics regarding allegations were not available.

One advantage to the community hours, rather than waiting on residents to come to the office, is “we can bring staff out into the community at times that are convenient  to working people,” according to a spokesperson for Healey.

State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry was also present at the community hours and City Councillor at-large Ayanna Pressley assisted with inviting constituents to attend.
