Carney opens new wing for Family Medicine

Carney Hospital last week unveiled a $2 million state-of-the-art Family Medicine Center located in the Seton Medical Office Building, on the east side of the hospital’s Dorchester Avenue campus.

Designed for the Carney’s growing Family Medicine Department, the new center occupies most of the ground floor at the Seton building, and features 26 exam rooms in 7,400 sq. ft. of space. The center, which will begin scheduling patients this month, offers local convenient access to comprehensive primary care.

“We are extremely excited to be moving into this modern, new center,” said Dr. Glenn O’Grady, Carney Hospital’s Family Medicine Department Chair. “The facility has been built with patient care and access in mind. Family medicine is the cornerstone of providing excellent community-based care. We take a holistic approach to patient care, combining evidenced-based medical practices in a supportive, patient-focused setting. Providing culturally sensitive care is central to our vision for the new Carney Family Medicine Center.”

A relatively new medical specialty in Massachusetts, Family Medicine Physicians are specially trained to provide comprehensive primary care for the entire family, from pre-natal care and the delivery of babies, to the care of children, parents and grandparents. Many Family Medicine physicians also receive additional specialty training in disciplines like obstetrics, women’s health, preventive medicine and sports medicine.

Last July, the Carney Family Medicine Department officially launched its Residency Program and welcomed the first ten residents to Carney Family Medicine. The program is affiliated with the Tufts University School of Medicine and will prepare the next generation of young physicians to deliver care to diverse, multi-cultural communities like Dorchester and Quincy.

The Carney Family Medicine Department has focused on recruiting physicians, residents and staff from diverse backgrounds and with language skills, including Spanish, Portuguese, Vietnamese and Haitian Creole. Carney’s physicians provide a full range of medical services including:  Annual physical examination and wellness check; Minor procedures; Cancer screening; Family planning; Infant and child care, including school and sports physicals; Management of chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, skin diseases, joint problems, overweight, asthma and respiratory conditions; depression and women’s health issues; vaccines and travel medicine; Concussion Clinic, including pre-evaluation and post-evaluation treatment.
