New city office to focus on Olympics

As Boston readies itself for a potential summer Olympic Games in 2024, the city has created a department to focus on the development of its plans and policy in the context of the Games. The Office of Olympic Planning will bring on Sara Myerson to oversee the city’s economic analysis, mitigation analysis, public health and safety studies, and transportation planning in relation to the Games.

“Her top priority will be to ensure that Boston will benefit in the long-term from holding the Games and that any planning efforts are in line with the city’s overall goals,” said Mayor Martin Walsh in a statement last week.

Before coming to the Office of Olympic Planning, Myerson was chief of staff and director of policy for the Preservation of Affordable Housing in Boston and advised clients on public-private development as a senior analyst at HR&A Advisors.

Though he is not yet a part of the planning office, the city’s Olympic liaison, John FitzGerald, got a new job title last week: Director of Olympic Operations and Special Projects. He is currently on the Boston Redevelopment Authority’s payroll.

Boston 2024, the private nonprofit organization behind the Olympic bid, will foot the bill for the office. Myerson begins in her new role on Mon., April 27, a day before the city’s next public meeting on the Games, which will be held at Roxbury Community College beginning at 6:30 p.m.
