Utility pole crashes down on car on Erie Street for second time in three years

A man spent more than 40 minutes trapped in his car Friday evening after a utility pole collapsed, falling on his car and bringing live wires down with it on Erie Street at Washington Street.

The incident happened almost three years to the day after a pole in the same stretch of Erie collapsed on a car with five people inside; they managed to escape just before the car burst into flames.

The pole that fell Friday crushed the right side of the car around 7:20 p.m. Firefighters could not get the man out until Eversource shut off power to the area because of the presence of the live wires, which the company finally did, remotely, around 8 p.m.
