17 held in gang bust after year-long probe

Police on Wednesday arrested 17 rival gang members and confiscated 22 guns as part of a year-long, multi-agency task effort dubbed Operation Hanover and focused on Dorchester and Roxbury.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office indicted all 17 on a total of 98 charges related to firearms and drugs. Along with the guns, which resulted in nine suspects charged with trafficking or illegally selling firearms, officers also recovered “significant amounts of drugs” including heroin and cocaine, and close to $200,000 in cash.

DA Dan Conley said in a statement the operation “was a targeted effort to identify, apprehend, and prosecute the driving players in a deadly feud between the rival Wendover and Cameron Street groups.”

Beginning last June, Boston Police and ATF agents orchestrated the purchase of guns and drugs from members of both gangs, Conley said. Added Boston Police Commissioner William Evans in a statement:

“Seventeen individuals responsible for driving the violence in our city are behind bars and, hopefully, second-guessing their decision to get involved in gang-related activities in the first place. And, to those still out there who think it’s okay to pick up a gun, today’s arrests should serve as a message and warning that the men and women of the Boston Police Department will not tolerate gang related violence and those who cause it.”
