Dorchester youngsters and their parents are invited to attend a special event hosted by the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts next week. The registration event at the James J. Rice Amvets Post 28 at 33 Romsey St., Dorchester is sponsored by Troop 28, the Dorchester scouting outfit that is based at the post. The event starts Wed., Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.

Cub Scouts are ages 8 to 10 and-a-half and Boy Scouts are ages 10-and-a-half to 17. The registration fee is $60 for a year.

Scouting is a tool that provides youths with character building, loyalty, lifelong friendship development and leadership challenges,” said Dennis Conway, who is leading the effort. “Scouts have opportunities to learn as well as earn merit badges in over 100 areas including sports, crafts, science, trades, business, and careers.”

The registration night will cover what can be expected once registered and will include stories from current and former scouts. Games will be played and prizes will be awarded. Parents or an accompanying adult, who are required to attend, can talk to leaders to understand the programs and ask any questions they may have. Adults are also welcome to sign up as volunteer leaders.

“The basic principles to do your best, on your honor, and to be prepared, have and always remain the goal of the scouting program at Pack & Troop 28,” said Conway. “Scouting has in recent years become more of a family event and the family members of both Cubs and Scouts are welcomed to participate in many of the activities of both the Pack & Troop.”

Activities include team building, service projects, sack races, hiking and other physical activities, field trips, science projects, camping trips at their weekend base at Sayre Reservation in Milton as well as the Northern Nexus in New Hampshire, where the local council has three well established Scout Camps located.
