To the Editor:
I am writing in support of
O'Flaherty family at 99 Melville Avenue. I want to start off
by saying that I do not know the family or any of the
plaintiffs. I live in the St. Marks' area of Dorchester on
Centre Avenue. I was born and raised in Dorchester and I
still live here. I am appalled at what is happening here in
my town. Why is there a witch hunt to have this house
demolished? I have seen this house and it looks like it has
always been there along with similar homes. It is a home to
a family struggling to make a life for themselves. If all
the houses in Dorchester looked like 99 Melville Avenue,
what a beautiful place it would be to look at and to
live.
The plaintiffs state in the letter
to the editor in the April 27th issue of the Reporter,
entitled "In support of Melville Avenue Plaintiff": "Her
depth of knowledge and her can-do attitude have affected
solutions that have positively impacted the quality of life
for all of us." I see no positive impact on the O'Flaherty
family. Her actions and those of others who signed the
letter show no support for a positive outcome for this
family. If this is what you call caring about the
neighborhood and the wider community of Boston, God help us
all.
Dorchester is changing in many
ways and more new people move here every day and it makes me
very happy. The letter states that working together we make
Dorchester a better place to live. It goes on to say that we
are all neighbors, working to solve common problems. If this
is an accurate statement, why does anyone need to demolish a
home and disrupt a family in this way? I just do not
understand it and I for one will stand with the O'Flaherty
family to see that there is a positive outcome for them.
The letter also states that having
a house torn down would be the worst possible outcome for
the neighborhood. What is the best possible outcome?
Inspectional Services Department and Zoning Board should be
held accountable for their original decision.
We can all learn from our mistakes
and make positive changes but the solution to this situation
should not include the removal of this home.
