In public schools, key is on closing 'achievement gap'

News that the man who would be the next superintendent of Boston' public schools was backing out of the post overshadowed a conference last weekend to discuss the achievement gap; a trend that shows students from minority backgrounds consistently outperformed by white students and their peers in suburban schools. But neighborhood leaders who attended Saturday's meeting made it clear that there is much left to be done.

The field of candidates hoping to fill the city council's vacant second district seat widened considerably this week as the council was poised to finalize dates for a special election, with a preliminary to be held on April 17 and a final election on May 15.

Rev. Jim Larner, Dorchester man:
Stability is a virtue he cherishes
Father James Larner will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his ordination with a Mass at St. Gregory's this weekend. Larner, who has been posted at St. Gregory's since 1989 and spent 37 of his 50 priestly years in the neighborhood, says his mantra has been one of steadfast diligence to the work of the parish.

Maintenance seen lacking at local beaches
A Metropolitan Beaches Commission led by state Rep.'s Jack Hart and Anthony Petrucelli has concluded that maintenance and a lack of accountability at the Department of Conservation and Recreation are major obstacles in efforts to improve Boston Harbor beaches including Tenean and Malibu beaches in Dorchester.

'Price is Right' for UMass-Boston Athlete
Myrna Tangar went to Los Angeles in search of a couple road victories along with the rest of the UMass-Boston women's basketball squad. She came back with a Ford Mustang, a wine cabinet, a treadmill, and an electric piano, the spoils of her Showcase Showdown victory on television's 'The Price is Right."
