Members of the John P. McKeon Post color guard lead veterans into Cedar Grove Cemetery this morning as part of the traditional observance of Memorial Day in Dorchester. Hundreds turned out to the cemetery and surrounding streets for a parade of veterans and supporters. Congressman Stphen Lynch gave the keynote address at the ceremony. The Dudley Street of the future? ![]() In January of this year, Boston was selected to receive up to $80 million to fund and endow a state-of-the-art community center on a site along Dudley Street in Uphams Corner. The money is available through a gift from Joan Kroc, who in 1998 donated $87 million to The Salvation Army to fund the construction of the first Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in San Diego. In her will, Joan Kroc left The Salvation Army an additional $1.5 billion to fund construction of centers across the country, with the San Diego center as the model. The Reporter's Brian Denitzio traveled to San Diego last week and saw first-hand what's possible in Uphams Corner-Dudley. In the first of a two-part series, he reports back on his tour of the San Diego Kroc Center, and examines its impact on the surrounding neighborhood with a keen eye on what a Kroc Center could mean for Dorchester. A task force of professionals and parishioners will examine the physical and financial well-being of Saint Peter Parish over the summer, then report to the full community in the fall with recommendations about how to move forward with the impoverished parish.
