Hundreds of police from Massachusetts and beyond assembled in front of St. Mark's Church this morning before a funeral Mass for Trooper Paul Barry.

Tenant dispute imperils Fields Corner mall plan
Plans to bring keystone merchant A.J. Wright to the Fields Corner mall are imperiled because of a clause in their lease that would allow them to back out if renovations to the mall do not begin by June 30. Behind the problem is the refusal of current tenant Bd's to leave the space, citing a verbal agreement and expired lease clause that granted the store six months to vacate the mall.

 

Inspectional Services orders halt to development in Lower Mills
The discovery by Lower Mills Civic Association Members that construction at 911 Grant Place was different from plans approved by the association has led to a stop work order from inspectional services and a proposed ordinance against such changes by City Councillor Maureen Feeney.

 

Civic leaders press case for more anti-crime funds
Seven Dorchester civic associations sent a letter to city hall asking that the developing budget be supplemented with funding from the city's Budgetary Fund Balance to support a number of anti-crime measures.

 

Summer tennis program to set up shop in Dot Park
The Tenacity summer tennis program will set up residence at Dorchester Park for seven weeks this summer. The city-wide program, founded in 1999, blends tennis lesson with academic instruction to give over 3,000 city youths a chance to exercise their serving arm and their brain during the summer vacation.

 

Catholic youth group makes big impact with small changes
Teenagers from five Catholic parishes in Dorchester and Roxbury meet monthly to discuss the violence they see in their schools and neighborhoods and to talk about strategies for change. This Saturday, Cardinal Sean O'Malley will join the group for a mass and reception dinner at St. Catherine Drexel Parish.

New film chronicles life in 'the game'
A documentary from local filmmaker John Oluwode Adekoje follows the story of Mario Rodrigues and his friends from Cape Verde to Dorchester, from the innocence of childhood to drugs and guns. The film will be shown to the public at the Strand Theatre on June 30.
