State extends comment period, sets tour dates on Neponset path extension

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has extended by more than a month the public comment period for the Neponset River Trail extension. Comments will now be accepted, by email or phone, through August 14. DCR also has scheduled two site walks — on July 22 and July 26— to explore the different alternatives for the trail’s extension into Mattapan and/or Milton.  Read more

New frame for Lucky Strike site

The owner of the site that once housed an Adams St. bowling alley says he’s making another run at building a mix of residential units and commercial space.

Saying he had been absent because of a heart attack a year and a half ago, owner Tam Tran told the Fields Corner Civic Association on Tuesday that he will come back to the group in September to present new plans for the site.  Read more

Fields Corner Main Street plans "stimulus" party for Wednesday

Summer beach bash gets financial boost

Good news this week for those who enjoy the annual Dorchester Beach Festival. Organizers have secured a $4,000 grant for this year’s celebration from the group Save the Harbor / Save the Bay. The funding from the Better Beaches Small Grants Program supports programming on the metropolitan region’s public beaches and are made possible by a $25,000 grant from The Boston Foundation, $25,000 of in-kind support from theDepartment of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and financial support of Save the Harbor’s corporate partners.  Read more

Nancy RousseauNancy RousseauSoon after an earthquake devastated Haiti in January, three thousand people packed Hibernian Hall in Roxbury. The high turnout, with only a few days notice, was in part thanks to Mattapan resident Nancy Rousseau and several others who organized the event.

“It was challenging to pull off that event in such a short time and be the anchor of the event on that day,” says Manolia Charlotin, Rousseau’s friend and colleague. “She was so calm. It really impressed me that she could maintain that level of calm on such a hectic day. I suppose that’s because for Nancy her work is about the people she’s helping. It keeps her focused.”  Read more

Hearing on Caritas sale set for July 1 in Dot

A hearing on the $830 million sale of the Caritas Christi hospital system is set for the Local 103 IBEW Hall on Freeport St., according to state Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office. The July 1 hearing, the last one of six slated to be held in each of the communities affected by the sale, starts at 6 p.m.  Read more

BPL task force yields meeting to Lower Mills closure foes

Supporters of the Lower Mills branch library on Monday night pushed back against the forming of a Boston Public Library task force to handle “transitioning of services” as the City Council weighs Mayor Thomas Menino’s proposal to close the Richmond St. building.

Some of the sharpest criticism, directed at Boston Public Library officials who had gathered the task force at Caritas Carney Hospital, came from state Sen. Jack Hart. “I think we’re heading in the wrong direction here,” said Hart, a South Boston Democrat.  Read more

The state Department of Conservation and Recreation unveiled five proposals aimed at extending a path along the Neponset River from Milton’s Central Avenue to Mattapan Square this week. The proposed one-mile extension will connect Pope John Paul II Park, a 72-acre area between the expressway and the Neponset River marshes, to the Neponset Valley Parkway in the Hyde Park neighborhood. Currently, the 2.5-mile trail links Pope John Paul II Park to Central Ave.  Read more
