A farewell and then a hello

Feb. 04, 2010

As I write this, it has been brought to my attention that one of the world’s leading child porn distributors was doing so from his home about 100 feet from my front door. Kind of gives me a queasy sense of uneasiness in the pit of my stomach. An absolute maggot.  Read more

Typical off-season drama: Damon v. Devious Yankees

Feb. 04, 2010

Somehow the Yankees arrange one of these sly tricks every winter. Usually, they need a foil; a role often gleefully played by your pets, the Red Sox. But this year they managed it all by themselves.  Read more

January and February from the Hill

Feb. 04, 2010

January and February are the darkest months, and the coldest, and the snowiest. In our part of the world, this is the time when the rocks lose the last of their Autumn heat and the earth itself heaves with frost.”

The Pentagon and our communities: overspending vs. vital juman needs

Feb. 04, 2010

One in every five people in Boston’s minority communities is looking for work. In some areas, like the Blue Hill Avenue corridor, two in five are completely out of the workforce. And the city and state are in no position to help those people. They are dealing with their own budget crises.  Read more

The Waiting line is fast dwindling

Feb. 04, 2010

By James Dolan

The ranks are thin. Where once stood thousands of young soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines. there are huge gaps. Those who are left are stooped, wrinkled, and gray. As we watch, more crumple to the ground. Taps sounds in the distance. The rest remain silent … waiting.
They are the rank and file. Their leaders, some of whom were veterans of World War I, are all gone.  Read more

Today’s case study: Let’s define a baseball Hall of Famer?

Jan. 28, 2010

Maybe it’s just a by-product of the crankiness of the times. We’re adrift in an era that much favors whimpering and whining about everything. But as never before, gripes mount not just about who does or does not get elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame – we’ve always had that – but the process itself; who votes and why and whether they are qualified or even sincere. It’s getting nasty.  Read more

A tribute to 'Judgie'

Jan. 28, 2010

Late last fall, word spread through the neighborhood that one of our own, Jerry “Judgie” Leary, had been diagnosed with a terminal disease. The longtime union official and veteran community activist and his wife wife Gayle are the parents of six – Patrick, Kaitlyn, James, Gerald P. III, Devin, and Ryan. Those who knew his capacity for empathy and propensity to help others decided to organize a fundraiser – we Dot people call it “a time” – to rally around their friend and his family. They set tomorrow – Fri., Jan.  Read more

Lots to muse about: Belichick’s legacy, NHL’s allure, Bobby Knight …

Jan. 21, 2010

Notes from the passing parade while waiting for Conan O’Brien and Jay Leno to settle their differences with flintlocks from 20 paces along the East River at sunrise:
And to think some regard pro football as America’s premier blood-sport. If you think Ray Lewis is nasty you should tangle with the average television network junior executive or budding producer loose on the streets of New York.
