The 16-team Safe Summer Streets Basketball League

The 16-team Safe Summer Streets Basketball League will complete regular season play tomorrow night before heading into the post-season tournament on Saturday, August 14th. During the past week games were played in the evening hours with Monday’s opener of the 4-team Girls division seeing the Lady Cavs defeating St. Ann’s in a nail-biter 40-39. Candace Andrews (21) led the Lady Cavs while St. Ann’s was led by Lauren Cavaleri (14). In the second game Kayla Cox (19) led the way for the Lady Zags as they defeated the Lady Tigers 36-27. The Lady Tigers were led by Markiah Monteiro (13). On Tuesday it was two more games from the Girls division with the opener seeing St. Ann’s defeat the Lady Tigers 55-46. Lauren Cavaleri (24) led St. Ann’s while the Lady Tigers were led by Jessica Teixeira (15). In the next game it was the Lady Zags, led by Kayla Cox (36), defeating the Lady Cavs 62-49. On Wednesday evening, after the College Alumni Night panel presentation a group of Alumni from the Girls division took on a team of All-Stars from the 2010 league. The Alumni team, led by Teresa Pina (24) edged out a 54-46 victory over the All-Stars who were led by Candace Andrews (15). Games for the two divisions of play for the Boys returned on Thursday with the first of three seeing the Lakers take down the Magic 60-45. Teammates Jerry Lopes (11) and Junior Monteiro (10) led the Lakers offense while Donnell Jonas (18) led the Magic. In the middle game it was the Celtics taking out the Cavs 67-50. Aaron Johnson (24) led the way for the Celtics while Paul Lewis (16) led the Cavs. In the late game the Horsemen, behind the duo of Tino Goncalves (17) and Khalil Newson (17), defeated Brooks 70-67. Tyrell Pugh (25) paced the offense for Brooks. On Friday, the first of two games saw the Bullets defeat the Cavs 73-45. Brendan MacDonald (17) and Daniel Santos (17) paced the Bullets attack while Tyrik Jackson (17) led the way for the Cavs. In the second game Run & Gun used a balanced attack to hold off C-Town 78-69. Run & Gun was led by Philip Lodge (16) while Joey Pires (20) led the C-Town offense.
On Saturday evening the final four games of the week were held with the opener seeing the Horsemen defeat the Celtics 94-78. Shawn Roach (28) led the Horsemen while the Celtics were led by Aaron Johnson (37). In the second game Run & Gun pulled out an 82-75 win over the Cavs. Max Barbosa (40) led the Run & Gun offense while Tyrik Jackson (36) led the way for the Cavs. In the next game it was the Bombers taking down the Magic 65-63. Maxwell Spinola (23) led the Bombers while Francis DePina (30) led the Magic. In the final game of the week Brooks defeated C-Town 77-74. Nick Simpson (24) led Brooks while C-Town was led by the tandem of Bernard Barbosa (16) and David Decard (16). For more info on our Athletic programs please contact Bruce Seals at ext. 2210.
Club Members to Attend Camp Northbound
To close out the summer program the Club will offer two special off-site activities, the first of which will see our 5th Annual Camp Northbound trip leaving from our McLaughlin Center site on Monday, August 23rd. The trip is being offered in partnership with Camp Micah in Bridgton, Maine which is opening up it’s facilities and staff so that 150 club members will be able to take part in this special event. Club members from all three service locations will enjoy sports, water activities, arts, hiking, team building activities and much more. Thanks to the Camp Northbound staff and to the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation for making this special event possible and congratulations to all of the members selected to participate. Session #2 Closing Olympics
The second session of the Summer program will wrap up this Friday, August 13th with an on-site Olympics for all 200 participating members. There will be activities in all core program areas and an outdoor barbecue. This day will conclude the second of our 2 – 3 week sessions and lead us into Workshop Week, which marks the final week of the on-site Summer program. Registration for Workshop is ongoing with limited spots for Triple Play Sports (Athletics & Aquatics), Plain Art Painting (Arts), Crickets & Trips (Education), Great Performers (Music) and Field Trip Frenzy (Social Recreation). For our Teen members, the Safe Summer Streets program will continue through to Friday, August 20th.
