Jr. Police Academy

The Social Recreation program will be offering a special opportunity for club members ages 8 to 12 to participate in the Jr. Police Academy program. In collaboration with the Boston Police Department, the Academy will be held the week of August 2nd (Marr Clubhouse) and August 9th (Denney Center) and will run on a 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. schedule. The Academy offers participants a chance to visit sites related to the field of law including a courthouse, a jail and police headquarters as well as offering fun activities such as a Duck Tour. The Academy also gives members a chance to see what it is like to be a Police Officer and to meet officers from the local station. The week-long Academy is open to the first 9 members returning a signed permission slip and please note, there is no cost to participate. Safe Summer Streets Basketball League Begins
The 16-team Safe Summer Streets Basketball League began play this past week with games held over four nights. The league is part of the Safe Summer Streets program which expands our operating hours into the evening for our teen members. On Wednesday the first of two games opened play in the 4-team Intermediate Boys division with the Lakers, behind the offense of Phillip Lodge (13) and Junior Monteiro (11) defeating the Free Agents 47-44. The Free Agents were led by Maxwell Spinola (13) and Kaylab Silva (10). In the late game Brooks bested the Celtics 72-68 in a battle of teams in the 8-team Senior Boys division. Brooks was led by Tyrell Pugh (35) while the Celtics were led by the duo of Aaron Johnson (30) and Joao Fernandes (25). On Thursday night the opener saw the Magic defeat Duke 69-66. Ryan Gunter (20) led the Magic while Ryan Roach (15) led Duke. In the second game the Tsunami outlasted the Cavaliers 75-69. Damian Lugay (24) and Tyrik Jackson (28) led the Tsunami and Cavaliers respectively. On Friday evening three games were held with the opener seeing Run & Gun getting by the Bullets 66-65. Max Barbosa (20) and Daquan Hardy (16) led Run & Gun while Brendan MacDonald (30) led the Bullets. In the second game the Magic continued their winning ways with a 76-50 win over the Lakers. The Magic were led by Ryan Gunter (24) and Eduardo DeLeon (18) while the Lakers were led by Phillip Lodge (23) and Jordan Williams (19). In the final game it was the Horsemen defeating C-Town 72-57. Racquish Leard (19) and Joey Brandao (16) led the Horsemen while C-Town was led by Joey Pires (16). On Saturday evening four more games were held to close out the week. In the opener the Bullets defeated the Cavaliers 61-52. Brendan MacDonald (26) led the Bullets while the Cavaliers were led by Tyrik Jackson (16) and Julian DelSolar (15). In the second game Brooks, behind Tyrell Pugh (20) and Nick Simpson (18), edged out C-Town 65-49. Joey Pires (14) and Joey Centeio (12) headed the C-Town offense. In the third game the Horsemen finished strong to defeat the Tsunami 76-72. Shaun Roach (25) and Ryan O’Neal (15) paced the Horsemen offense while the Tsunami were led by Michael Downing (22). In the final game of the week it was Duke taking down the Free Agents 47-46. Steve Karlberg (12) led Duke while Kaylab Silva (16) led the Free Agents. Regular season games, including the 4-team Girls division which will begin this week, will continue weekday evenings through early August followed by the play-off tournament. Senior Class Night Event
On Tuesday, July 27th, as part of the Safe Summer Streets program, we will hold a special event for our incoming Senior Class. This group of members will be invited to a workshop with Shameka Walters, an Admissions Representative from Stonehill College. The workshop will help the Senior Class prepare for this very important year, ensuring they are aware of all the steps needed to move their educational goals forward. We will review the college application process, discuss the S.A.T. exams, financial aid, scholarships, visiting schools and more. The workshop will be followed by an ice cream social for all participants. In September, this group will be invited back to the Club to meet with the Club’s Education Director to learn of the activities being offered within the College Bound program during the school year designed to assist them during this process.
