Octogenarian lady crime fighter gets the job done

For those of you who read last week’s column concerning suspects of advancing years (48+), I would like to start off this week by introducing you to a tough as nails, fiery 85-year-old Fields Corner crime fighter.

October 26, 4:12 p.m.
We start our little saga outside the Fields Corner MBTA station where a gentleman from Dorchester was driving by and happened to spot an acquaintance from the neighborhood who waved him over. The man pulled over and the obviously pregnant woman asked the man if he would be so kind as to give her a ride about four blocks up Dorchester Avenue and he gladly obliged.

When they arrived she requested that he back into the driveway and wait for her while she paid a quick visit to her friend. Minutes later the pregnant woman came running back out to the truck followed by a very agitated elderly woman who stood in front of the truck refusing to move and screaming in an indecipherable language at the pair in the truck. The man was totally dumbstruck, just what the hell had he gotten himself into? The pregnant lass then alighted from the vehicle and ran up Dorchester Avenue. Soon thereafter the Boston PD showed up and things got a little bit clearer.

Through an interpreter the woman [victim] explained that she had answered a knock at her door and saw a 35-year-old woman standing there. Suddenly, the woman pushed her into her apartment, grabbed her around the neck, and pulled a gold chain with pendant off. The woman then fled, followed by the victim, who ran as fast as her 84-year-old legs would carry her. The do-gooder gentleman, the victim, and another witness all positively identified a 35-year-old Dorchester woman through a photo array. A warrant was issued and the woman was arrested for unarmed robbery of an elderly (65+) person the next day. A brave lady, indeed.

October 26, 3:12 a.m.
Officers responded to an ATM alarm at the Meetinghouse bank in Lower Mills. On arrival they observed through the glass doors of the bank’s foyer that the ATM machine was wide open with wisps of smoke coming from it. A passerby pointed to a man holding a large bag running down Richmond Street. The officers gave chase and tackled him before he reached Adams Street, and after a struggle, he was placed in handcuffs. Atop the suspect’s head was a black ski mask and in the large bag were chisels, wedges, crowbars and an electronic grinder for cutting and boring holes that was extremely hot to the touch. The 45-year-old Dorchester cat burglar was arrested for B&E with intent to commit a felony and other charges.

October 8, 2:08 p.m.
Officers responded en masse to the Mt. Washington Bank on Gallivan Boulevard for a report of a robbery. On scene the bank teller stated that a large man with red cheeks and a pronounced limp came up to her window and dropped down a note on her counter threatening to stab her with a dirty needle. After receiving about $1,200, he limped out the door. It was then that she noticed he was wearing a cast on his right foot. The suspect hopped into a brown taxi that was last seen headed on the Expressway south. The teller was shown a photo array of possible suspects. She picked out a 24-year-old Dorchester man who was suspected of a similar crime in Braintree. The taxi was located and the driver explained that he had dropped the suspect off at the South Shore Plaza. Braintree detectives arrested the suspect at the Plaza where he was buying new items of clothing. Several pieces of clothing that he had worn during the heist were found in the men’s room trash bins.
