Education Program to Host Financial Aid Night

The Education program at the Boys and Girls Club is pleased to announce that we will be holding a special Financial Aid Seminar on Tuesday, January 17th in the Homework Center. The seminar will be open to all High School Juniors and Seniors along with their parents. We will review the Financial Aid application for College, and the documentation you will need to have in order to complete your application properly. The Financial Aid Night is one of many activities offered to High School members as part of the College Bound series which also includes: the Wilson Daily Prep on-line S.A.T Course, College Tours, Application Workshop, assistance with College Essays and one-to-one guidance. Walter Denney Center News
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester’s Denney Center Unit, located in the Harbor Point section, is planning a busy schedule of upcoming activities. Some of these special events include: a Roller Skating trip (1/13), an Outing to Wahlburgers and a Movie with the Under the Tree Foundation (1/14), the M.L.K. Day of Service and Luncheon with U-Mass Boston (1/16), Parent Game Night (1/19), and the Teen Munch & Mingle (1/20). On 1/27 we will host our Annual Winter Open House for residents of the community. There will be food, games, tours and free memberships for Harbor Point residents who are registering (and re-registering) on this night. We welcome all members of the community to stop by and learn about the programs available. In addition to these special events, some of our ongoing programs include the Keystone Club (ages 14-18) and Torch Club (ages 10-13) Leadership programs, Patriot’s Kids Café Dinner program, McCormack Gym, U-Mass Tutoring Program, Art Classes, Philosophy Club, the Girls Group, Creative Writing, the Career Launch Jobs program and more. Fine Arts Program to Host Exhibit at U-Mass Boston
Congratulations to the following members who will be recognized next week by seeing their artwork entered into Boys and Girls Clubs of America’s National Fine Arts competition: Abbey Aiguier, Aja Credle, Alyssa Lopes, Ashalise Turpin, Ayanna Bragg, Barry Pritchard, Brittney Buchanan, Erica Correia, Jaelynn Leggett, Maia Duarte, Micha Smith, Michana Smith, Michelle Beazley, Tyhlon Cromartie, Noni Louisma, Ivanildo DaMoura, Nahla Foiz, Najwa Nelson, Nicholas Clements, Patrick Kelly, Sean Kelly, Sydney Denver, Briana Bazile, Kyla Sneed, Emily Espinal, Lady Autumn Lewis, Karla Santana, Stacy Exarchos, A’Zhane George, Sorry Bah, Jamira Malave, Praize Johnson and Stacy Exarchos. The first part of the competition will see our members works, both in Fine Arts and Photography, on display at U-Mass Boston on Wednesday, January 18th which is the local portion of the exhibit. Selected pieces from our local exhibit will then be entered into the Northeast regional exhibit being held in Southport, CT during the month of February. Winning entries from the Regional exhibit will be sent to the National exhibit being held in May in San Diego, CA. Good luck to all of our members on their outstanding entries. Career Prep Program
Members of the Club age 15 to 17 are reminded that the City of Boston’s HOPELine for Summer Jobs will soon be accepting registrations. Beginning on 2/1 the web-based portion of the registration will begin and remain in effect 24 hours a day through 3/2. Interested members can visit bostonyouthzone.com/byf and click on the summer jobs link. For those unable to register on-line phone-in registrations will be accepted on Tuesday, February 21st (10:00 to 2:00), Wednesday, February 22nd (10:00 to 2:00) and Thursday, February 23rd (10:00 to 2:00) at (617) 635-HOPE. Candidates registered on the HOPEline are eligible for a position but not guaranteed. Spots will be offered based on the funding available. Currently, the Career Prep program is working with the Boston Youth Fund’s After School Jobs program, and other private sources, to employ 35 teen members. All of the current participants will be taking part in a full-day training on 1/16.
