Music Clubhouse Idol Competition
March is Clubhouse Idol month! The exciting and popular competition is back for it’s second running. Starting Thursday, March 1st, the Dorchester Music Clubhouse will be hosting our Second Annual Clubhouse Idol competition. The grand prize will be an I-Pod Touch and a chance to perform at the Historic Strand Theatre on April 13th. The first round of auditions will take place in two locations, the Walter Denney Youth Center on Thursday, March 1st (6 – 8 p.m.) and the McLaughlin Youth Center on Friday March 2nd (6 - 7:30 p.m). The second round will take place on Friday, March 9th, in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester Teen Center. The competition will conclude with a finale on Friday, March 30th. February School Vacation Week
The Club will be closed on Monday, February 20th in honor of President’s Day then will re-open for the February School Vacation Week on Tuesday, February 21st through Saturday, February 25th with hours from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for members ages 8 to 12. Our Teen members will be offered a 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. schedule (excluding Saturday). To accommodate the new schedule, the Kids Café program will offer breakfast at 9:00 a.m. and lunch at 1:00 p.m. to pre-registered members. Please note that hours for our Bantam members (ages 6 & 7) will be from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Parents, please remember that all Bantams will need to be picked up promptly at 1:00 p.m. or immediately after participating in the Kids Café program. Special events for the week include: a Gamesroom Fashion Show (2/22), Boys 18&U Game against the Lawrence Club (2/22), a Gamesroom Talent Show (2/23), Boys 15&U All-Star Basketball game against the Lynn Club (2/23), a Tubing Trip (2/23), the Keystone Club volunteering at Cradles to Crayons (2/24), a Cultural Fair (2/25) and the Marr-lin Swim Team at the Worcester Invitational Meet (2/25). Savin Hill Baseball League Registration
The Savin Hill Baseball League will be holding registration for the 2012 season on Saturday, February 25th, from 10:00 to 2:00 at the Club. Parents can register children for T-Ball (5 & 6 Year olds), Major B (7 to 9 year olds), Major A (10 to 12 year olds), and the Teen League (13 to 15 year olds). Once again Savin Hill and Cedar Grove will be combining our Teen League. Residents from all over Dorchester are encouraged to participate. Registration fees for the upcoming year are tentatively scheduled to be: T-Ball - $50.00, Major B and Major A - $60.00 and Teen League - $125.00. Parents should note that the Club will be hosting Spring Training and Try-out dates in March. Savin Hill Baseball League participants who wish to participate in the Spring Training program must be registered members of the Boys & Girls Club. All members of Savin Hill Baseball will be required to bring birth certificates for proof of age. Regional Fine Arts Exhibit
Congratulations to nine of our members who were recognized this week by seeing their artwork entered into Boys and Girls Clubs of America’s National Fine Arts competition, which is currently being organized in five regional exhibits across the country as a follow-up to local exhibits held last month. After hosting our local exhibit at U-Mass Boston in January, the following members will be representing our Club at the Northeast regional exhibit being held in Southport, CT during the month of February: Stacy Exarchos, Praize Johnson, Ivanildo DaMaura, Sorry Bah, A’Zhane George, Ashalise Turpin, Kyla Sneed, Jessica Carvalho and Jamira Malave. Good luck to all of these members on their outstanding entries. Winning entries from the Regional exhibit will be sent to the National exhibit being held in May in San Diego, CA. In addition, selected pieces from our local exhibit will also be entered in to a separate regional Photography competition in the Spring.
