Letter to the Editor: L Street runners team up for city charities

To the Editor:
Once again the L Street Running Club (LSRC) members will be hosting the 28th running of the Jim Kane Sugar Bowl 5K road race, on Thursday July 16 at 7 pm. The course runs along Day Boulevard, from the roadway leading into the Boston Teacher’s Union, to P Street, and back to the Union hall. While we realize this may create some inconvenience for the residents of South Boston, we work hard to make sure to minimize the inconvenience and to make sure the race is an asset to the community.

All proceeds from the race go to local charities including the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Boston, Dorchester and Charlestown, The Curley Community Center, The South Boston Collaborative, Children’s Hospital, Father Bill’s Homeless Shelter, and St Francis’ Homeless shelter. Proceeds also allow LSRC to provide funding for Cushing Manor’s Christmas Party, Christmas in the City, and fifty Christmas Baskets, which the club members distribute to needy families in the local area. In addition, we use the race proceeds to provide two Student Grants for high school seniors heading to college. Last year the L Street Running Club (LSRC) was able to distribute $12,000 from the proceeds of the Jim Kane Sugar Bowl 5K to our hometown charities.

While Day Boulevard will be closed for a short time on the evening of the 16th (from approximately 6:55 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.), no cars will be towed or mandated to be off the streets for this race. We will have volunteers at every intersection, along with the State Police, to ensure the safety of all runners. Runners will park at Carson Place parking lot, or they will come by train; they should not take residential parking places. We encourage you to join us on the 16th, to run the race (lstreet.org) or to cheer on the runners.
Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the Jim Kane Sugar Bowl 5k!
