Dear Editor:
I write today to clarify the information included in the
recent Reporter article: "Beaches get $2 million; now
looking for 'friends.'"
The Metropolitan Beaches Commission was established by
the Massachusetts Legislature in 2006 to take an in-depth
look at each of the region's beaches and identify the
current conditions on each beach. The Beaches Commission,
which I co-chaired, recently released its report that made
numerous recommendations that will bring our beaches to
their fullest potential as significant recreational and
economic resources.
Based on the work of the Commission, which included
individuals from all over the region, including Dorchester
resident Roseanne Foley, the Legislature fought for a $2
million increase for the Metropolitan Boston beaches,
including Malibu, Savin Hill and Tenean. The Dorchester
state elected delegation was instrumental in obtaining this
funding increase.
While I congratulate Governor Patrick for adopting these
recommendations, let's not forget the hard work of the
Metropolitan Beaches Commission in clearly defining the
issues, or the Massachusetts Legislature's willingness to
commit the necessary monies needed to begin addressing the
problems that exist today on the beach. Working together, we
can ensure that our beaches will be the best they can
be.
