Democracy Tolls
for Whom?
To the Editor:
As I sit at my computer, the
Church bells across Mother Julia Road echoed a solitary
gong. It is 1 p.m. on Monday, March 14. I have just returned
from City Hall where I attempted to fulfill my civic
responsibility by casting an absentee ballot. I'll be in New
Hampshire on Tuesday &endash; the date of the special
election in the 12th Suffolk District.
I was three minutes late for the
noon deadline. I could not vote. They knew that I was on my
way, since I had talked with them only a half-hour
before.
My consolation is that, as an
Irish-American, I'll be a qualified minority in the New
Boston by the time of the next election for representative
in the 12th. The folks in the Election Commission wouldn't
dare pull that stuff then.
Well, anyways I stopped at Ye Old
Oyster House for a delicious bowl of clam chowder and corn
bread. The garage parking ticket cost me only nine dollars.
I hope no one loses by one vote!
