Triumphs in Field's Corner To the Editor: I had the pleasure to be involved in these events in May and June and I wanted to thank some folks, who deserved it. So, if you'll allow me here's some belated but well deserved words of appreciation. Boston Shines. I'd like to thank Ed Crowley, who even though he and his wife Karen were off in Hawaii, left me with great instructions on how to run the Boston Shines clean-up in Field's Corner in May: Just stay out of Pat and Frank's way- that would be Frank Fasoli of Tri-Construction, Inc. who at Ed's suggestion purchased asphalt to fill about twenty tree pits that no longer had trees and had become mini-trash collection pits. Tri-Construction, Inc. not only paid for the asphalt, but Frank also supplied the equipment and several men to do the work. Pat Walsh of Walsh Construction cleaned up the area around Clayton Street, Park Street, Sturtevant Street, and the Adams Street side of Christopher Street. Alan Issokson from Levanbaum Insurance and Real Estate hired several residents for the day, who helped clean the Area C-11 Police Station, the Gibson Street Public Works Yard, and the Field's Corner Library and the square at Park Street & Dorchester Avenue. At all of these locations had several cubic yards of mulch put down and spread out on them by this crew. Alan, Frank and Pat also do this type of general clean-up around their business's all year long and not just on Boston Shines clean up days. By the way, have you noticed those barrels with flowers on Dorchester Avenue in Field's Corner over the past four years and how much nicer they make Field's Corner look? Well, hats off to Mary Lou O'Neil and Craig Hughes and their students from the Dorchester Alternative School for providing us with a little bit of the Boston Public Gardens here in Field's Corner. Field's Corner Civic - Our recent awards night recognized the following individuals and agency's for making Field's Corner a better place to live: Ira Schlosser from both the Dorchester House and Field's Corner Main Street received our Founder's Award for leading the revival of the Field's Corner Main Street program. Molly Dunford from the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services received our Public Service award given to an individual for trying to handle and coordinate all of our neighborhood's issues. Our Public Service Award to an agency was given to the Inspectional Service's Department's Code Enforcement Unit and was accepted on behal of the entire division by Sergeant Chris Stockbridge for being so responsive to Field's Corner complaints last winter during those sixteen snowstorms, never mind the weekly calls about commercial storeowners who allow their dumpster's to continually overflow. Ben Johnson from the Blarney Stone received our award for the Businessperson of the Year for his unwavering support of Field's Corner and Dorchester over the past five years and in the process helping to support a whole lot of groups through out Dorchester. Finally, Charles Clemons, a Field's Corner-based business owner of First Chioice Limousine receieved our Business of the Year Award for supporting several events over the past several years. We salute all of you for making Field's Corner a beter place to live and shop. David Crowley, Mayor of Dorchester Campaign - To Joyce Mackan and John O'Toole for throwing a very successful and fun Cinco De Mayo party, which helped get David's camapign get off to a rousing start, thank you. On May 24, we threw David's big fundraiser "A Night of Champions" at the Blarney Stone. Our modest goals at the beginning of David's campaign was to raise between $7,000 to $10,000 for David to give to the Dorchester Day Parade Committee, to have David set the attendence record for a single Mayor of Dorchester fundraiser party and to give David a memorable start to his upcoming thirtieth birthday. We succeded on all counts with David Crowley's campaign raising at last count $13,000 with the promise of more from David and his family. Next, with the support of the people of Dorchester, approximately 225 people attended David's party on that night and, yes, that does include the 30 kids and their musical director Mr. Chu from the Kenny Elementery School Marching Band. Tony Cerulle from Boston Duck Tours (another Field's Corner-based business) helped to make "A Night of Champions" a memorable one by arranging for one of their Ducks to transport David and the Crowley family down to the Blarney Stone. The Kenny Elememtry School Marching Band was to march down Dorchester Avenue with David and his family as a surprise, but due to rain the band met David inside the Blarney Stone. So just like the World Champion New England Patriots and the Red Sox, David got to have his "Rolling Thunder Champion's Parade" through Field's Corner on that night. When David and his family arrived at the Blarney Stone I'll never forget David Crowley's face as he exited the Boston Duck Boat and came down the rear steps waving his Top Hat. David then walked into the Blarney Stone while the band played on in front of over 150 folks to a crowd, that cheered well, like David just had hit a game winning walk-off homer, which he had. Thanks to Ben, Charles, Janet, Alan, Pat, Frank, Ed & Karen, Janet, Meg, Gloria, and my brother Jim for all your help and support. Sometimes folks, we take on another task like anyone of the above and we wince at the thougt of doing it, but sometimes we get more out of it than we put into it. In all of the above, I made more friends and memories than I had any right to expect. Thanks to all and enjoy the summer.
