Register for Scripps National Spelling Bee

Boston students and schools are invited to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program through the 6th Annual BCYF Spelling Bee. Boston students of public, charter, pilot, and parochial schools as well as home-schooled students are eligible to participate in BCYF’s Bee this spring only after they have won a Bee held at a Boston school. In addition to improving students’ spelling skills and broadening their vocabulary, Spelling Bee participation provides valuable experience in developing self-confidence—a necessary skill for success in public speaking and performing arts.

How to get involved: Schools must register with Scripps National Spelling Bee online at www.spellingbee.com by October 19, 2012. This will also serve as your registration for Boston Centers for Youth & Families. No individuals may register. There is an enrollment fee of $115 to Scripps National Spelling Bee which gives your school access to all of the resources and spelling materials from Scripps. Registered schools then host a Bee at their school to determine who will represent them at the citywide BCYF Spelling Bee in March 2013. The champion of the 6th Annual BCYF Spelling Bee will win a trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee. There will be other prizes for our area’s top spellers, including reference books and gift certificates.

Other benefits to participating in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program include the opportunity of receiving exclusive online access to teachers-only area of spellingbee.com, grade-specific word lists and study sheets for grades 1–8, study materials for your school spelling champion, the 2012 Classroom Pronouncer Guide, the 2012 School Pronouncer Guide, a free one-year subscription to Britannica Online for Kids (a $69.95 value), a free PowerspeaK12 foreign language course (a $100–$165 value), materials to conduct your Great American SpellCheck fund-raiser, award certificates, and key information about your local spelling bee program.
