In light of correspondence about
last week's story in these pages about the Archdiocese of
Boston's ongoing plans to reorganize local parochial
schools, the Reporter would like to respond.
• The source of last week's
story was one of the eight local pastors who have been
meeting to discuss changes, and the details were confirmed
by a second pastor;
• Although the overall
Archdiocesan project is called "Initiative 2010," these
decisions are likely to occur sooner than three years from
now. In fact, the changes may be in place for the 2008/2009
school year- that's just 18 months away;
• A source at the highest
level of the 2010 project, while insisting on anonymity, has
confirmed the accuracy of last week's story. The discussion
about regionalizing the schools has been among the eight
local pastors, and final decisions will be made by those
same priests;
• Following publication, a
planned meeting of pastors and school administrators last
Friday was abruptly cancelled, and the pastors were convened
in a private meeting at the chancery in Brighton to discuss
the reports and develop "talking points."
In our view, the Archdiocese has
failed badly in communicating what has been going on with
the 2010 Initiative in Dorchester and Mattapan, and where it
may lead, and whether local parish members or the larger
community will play any meaningful role.
It is our urgent hope that the
coming weeks will bring a more open process, and that any
pre-conceived ideas about how to structure local parishl
schools will be wiped clean. Our community already has had
its share of closures and they came abruptly, sometimes
without warning or input and with a certain disregard for
how integral parishes and their schools are to Catholics and
non-Catholics alike in this neighborhood. There is great
bitterness still over the Archdiocese's approach to
suppressing St. William and St. Margaret parish. The
church's credibility gap has now been widened further by a
failure to give a timely and reasonable explanation for what
the future holds for our Catholic schools.
The Archdiocese is right about one
thing: This conversation has to happen. Some Catholic
schools, and some entire parishes are struggling. A plan for
the future survival of some, but perhaps not all, of the
parishes is imperative.
We expect that, in the long run,
our reporting on this subject will result in a more open,
transparent discussion that will allow those effected
parishioners a meaningful seat at the table from the very
beginning.
Our Catholic parishes are more
than just worship spaces, classrooms and gymnasiums. They
are an essential element of what it means to be from
Dorchester and Mattapan. Whether Catholic or not,
generations have grown up in and around the parishes, and
for many their home parish helps shape their identity.
As society changes, parish life
will change too, likely a painful process for all. The
response to our reports last week was certainly evidence of
that.
But change should be accomplished
with respect and transparency from start to finish. We hope
that the days ahead will bring exactly that, for all of our
parishes.
Painful as the news may be for
some, we believe that our reports are accurate. Parishioners
have the right to feel disappointed, even angry- but such
emotions cannot mask the reality of the plans.
Our pledge is to keep our readers
informed, with facts and not idle speculation. Readers
should expect nothing less.
And for that, we will offer no
apology.
