It is the middle of March -
indeed, today is the Ides of March, the expression simply an
old Roman way of referring to the mid point, the 15th day of
this and other months.
We are also two days away from
March 17, St. Patrick's Day, the traditional day to
celebrate the life of Ireland's legendary early missionary
and himself the patron saint for Catholics in Boston. And
although this great Irish saint is recognized mythically for
"driving the snakes out of Ireland," his story is a far more
compelling one, and it's a story that should give pause when
we consider some current social issues.
For Patrick is believed to have
been born in Britain in the late days of the Roman Empire in
a little village near, or perhaps in, Wales. It is said that
at the age of 16, he was kidnapped and sold into slavery to
a Celtic chieftain in Ireland. But after six years, he
escaped captivity and made his way safely home to Britain.
From there, Ireland's patron saint
journeyed back to the island of Ireland and, it is said,
brought a form of Christianity to that then-pagan country.
Patrick spent the rest of his live ministering to the same
Celtic people who had once enslaved him.
The point here is to say that,
although we Irish like to think of St. Patrick as "one of
our own," he was in fact not Irish-born. He was an
immigrant, and indeed, his history is one of the earliest
recorded stories of an immigrant in a foreign
land.
And so we come this week to
consider two current day stories of immigrants &endash; one
the horrific dismantling of the lives of several hundred
so-called "illegal immigrants" last week by the federal
government in New Bedford, the other this news reported
Tuesday by the Associated Press:
"At least 10 Haitian migrants
drowned last week after the captain of the boat that brought
them to the Bahamas reached a sand bank and ordered them to
swim ashore. From there the passengers tried to get to the
beaches and suddenly they
realized that the sea was very deep. Those who knew how to
swim arrived to the beach but those who did not died. The
victims - nine men and one woman - were buried at a public
cemetery.
" 'Fleeing poverty and political
instability in their homeland, thousands of Haitians attempt
perilous ocean voyages to reach the Bahamas each year,' " an
official said. 'This is a situation we are experiencing
every week, every day, when your countrymen die and you know
exactly why because they are looking for jobs, for
opportunities.' "
The simple sad facts are that in
this month of celebrating the great Irish culture, and the
profound benefits Irish immigrants have brought to this
country, it is scandalous that we Americans have not found a
way to deal with immigration reform.
It is said there are 12 million
undocumented residents - "illegal immigrants" - living in
the United States, and it is undeniable that most are
seeking what those drowned Haitian sought, as did those
factory workers who until last week were earning meager
wages handcrafting equipment for our soldiers fighting the
war in Iraq. Almost all of them were simply seeking a chance
at freedom and a better, longer life for themselves and
their children.
As we gather this weekend to
observe the wondrous life of Ireland's great saint, this
Irish American will pause and ask these questions: What
would St. Patrick have to tell us about the treatment of
immigrants? And what should be our course?
