Last Monday, flames ripped through a
three-decker home on Blue Hill Ave, injuring 14
residents - eight adults and six children. As
firefighters hurried to put out the inferno, 54
year-old Mary Williams was one of the Mattapan
residents who rushed to assist in the rescue
efforts.
"Those are my neighbors," said Williams who
lives directly across from the horrific scene.
"What happened to these people is devastating and
this is the time for our community to show them we
care."
Now that the news crews have left the scene, the
families impacted by the incident remain in need.
Williams has stepped up to organize a Thanksgiving
dinner for all of the victims and their families,
as well as the firefighters who saved their lives.
"I'd originally planned a small family dinner at
my place, but God said 'Love thy neighbors as you
love yourself.' God led me to do this."
From passing out flyers throughout various
neighborhoods to arranging a hall at a local
church, Williams has made it possible for dozens of
families to enjoy Thanksgiving this year. Over 100
guests will gather from 4 to 7 p.m. at Our Savior's
Lutheran Church in Dorchester. Mary, who will
prepare all the food herself, would gladly
appreciate any and all food donations.
Mary Williams also gives special thanks to: the
Mattapan Community Health Center, Shaw's, Stop
& Shop, BMF Paper Company, Pit Stop, Brothers,
Poland Spring, and Ice Box for their support and
donations.
Food donations can be dropped off at 1443 Blue
Hill Ave., Apt. #6 before noon on Thanksgiving Day.
