Kerry and Senate candidates to attend Dem state committee meeting in Dorchester

The Massachusetts Democratic Party's state committee meeting on Thursday night will draw outgoing U.S. Sen. John Kerry and two candidates vying for his seat. Other candidates seeking statewide office in the Bay State could also put in an appearance, at the meeting, which is set for the Boston Teachers Union Hall on Mt. Vernon St.

Congressmen Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Ed Markey (D-Malden) are expected to appear at the long-scheduled meeting. Lynch is formally kicking off his campaign for Kerry’s seat earlier in the day, while Markey has been in the race since December.

Lynch’s Thursday schedule includes stops at O’Brien’s Corner in Springfield, the Parkway Diner in Worcester and a 4 p.m. rally at Ironworkers Local 7 in South Boston. “I have spent the past few days talking to my family and close friends about this race, as I wanted to be sure that everyone understood what this decision would mean,” Lynch said in an email to supporters on Tuesday. “On Thursday, I will make my decision public.”

Kerry, who was confirmed as President Obama’s next Secretary of State on Tuesday, is making his own swing through Massachusetts on Thursday, visiting a YouthBuild USA site in Springfield in the morning, a Central Massachusetts “Thank You” event at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester in the early afternoon, and a “Thank You” event at Faneuil Hall at 6 p.m., which Lynch is scheduled to attend.
