Primary and general election dates set in Hart seat race

The primary in the race to to replace former state Sen. Jack Hart (D-South Boston) will be on April 30, while the general election will take place on May 28, Secretary of the Commonwealth Bill Galvin's office said Monday.

According to a release from Galvin's office:

The deadline for submitting nomination papers to the Boston Election Department is February 27, and the last day to file certified nomination papers with the Secretary of the Commonwealth is March 6. Nominations for the Senate require a minimum of 300 certified signatures.

Nomination papers are available at the Elections Division, Room 1705, McCormack State Office Building, One Ashburton Place, Boston.

The primary date falls on the same day as the primary for the U.S. Senate special election to replace John Kerry. Congressmen Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Ed Markey (D-Malden) are among the Democrats vying for the seat.

The state Senate seat's field currently includes two candidates: State Reps. Linda Dorcena Forry (D-Dorchester) and Nick Collins (D-South Boston). Rep. Forry is married to Reporter editor and publisher Bill Forry.

Hart resigned last week, taking a job at the law firm Nelson Mullins.
