Two-alarm fire in Mattapan three decker displaces 18

A two-alarm fire at 742 River St. on Monday sent one firefighter to the hospital with a cut and brought the American Red Cross in to help find temporary housing for 18 residents.

The fire, reported around 7:30 p.m., did an estimated $250,000 in damage according to the Boston Fire Department, which says the cause remains under investigation.

Mattahunt center hosts summertime high school prep

For motivated middle school students interested in getting a head start on high school preparation, the Mattahunt Wheelock Community Center in Mattapan is offering the Emerging Youth Advocates PUSH Summer Academy. New this year, the free six-week program runs daily from July 15 to August 23 and is open to incoming 7th and 8th grade students.  Read more

Mattapan man, 21, charged in child porn case

A 21-year-old Norfolk Street man is behind bars this week on high bail after he was arrested last week and charged in a child porn investigation. Luis Gonzalez was ordered held on $35,000 bail at his arraignment in Dorchester District Court on July 2. Gonzalez is alleged to have shared explicit images and videos of children using a peer-to-peer file-sharing program.  Read more

Man shot to death in Cummins Highway house

The Boston Police Department reports officers responding to a call about gunfire late Wednesday night found a man with gunshot wounds at 633 Cummins Highway.

He was taken to Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain, where he was pronounced dead.

Teen charged with trying to set Chez Vous rink on fire

A Mattapan 14-year-old was arraigned for arson Monday for allegedly setting the front door of the Chez Vouz roller rink on Rhodes Street on fire Saturday night after she was denied entry, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.  Read more

A fire reported around 3:40 a.m. on Saturday at 15 Evelyn St. sent three firefighters to the hospital and did an estimated $500,000 in damage, according to the Boston Fire Department.  Read more

Remarks from President Obama, Gov. Patrick and Mayor Menino at Interfaith Service

The following remarks at the ‘Healing Our City’ interfaith service were delivered at the South End’s Cathedral of the Holy Cross. The remarks are in the order they were delivered: Mayor Thomas Menino, who rose from his wheelchair to deliver his speech, Gov. Deval Patrick and President Barack Obama. The president later met with Boston Athletic Association volunteers and then left to meet with patients at Massachusetts General Hospital.  Read more
