WHEELOCK’S WINTER POLICY TALKS: THE FACES OF HOMELESSNESS

Thu, 02/21/2013 - 6:30pm

February 11, 2013 (Boston, MA): Wheelock College warmly welcomes the public to the first of our Winter Policy Talks series, The Faces of Homelessness, on Thursday, February 21st from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. The Faces of Homelessness Speakers' Bureau is comprised of extraordinary people who have given of themselves to share personally and powerfully with others about their own experiences of homelessness. From homeless activists to riveting poets, all have found a unique way for their voices to be heard. Please join us for an impactful presentation that allows people to personalize homelessness, dispel stereotypes, and inspire hope by presenting the first-hand experiences of homelessness.

Comprised of currently and formerly homeless individuals who are passionate about sharing their life stories and educating the public, The Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau is a program of the National Coalition of the Homeless. Since its inception in 2010, the Massachusetts program has been supported by three AmeriCorps VISTA members and overseen by the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance (MHSA). Speakers with diverse backgrounds and life experiences provide a glimpse into the challenges of homelessness and the stability that comes with a place to call home. All of them exemplify resourcefulness, perseverance and strength in a society where housing is not a guarantee for anyone.

The Massachusetts Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau is committed to engaging new partners across the Commonwealth and New England in the mission of ending homelessness. Their speakers and facilitators humanize homelessness through dialogue and the sharing of personal stories; advocate for long-term housing solutions; and transform hearts and minds as they inspire community groups to work for a society in which no one is without a home. By linking the individual lives and stories with broader systemic and structural factors, the panelists are able to clearly and powerfully advocate the need for change.
