Free prostate screenings at Carney Hospital
By
The fourth week in September marks the Annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, one of the oldest and largest coordinated cancer screenings in America. Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men and will take the lives of nearly 30,000 men this year alone.
Men age 40 and older are at risk for prostate cancer, and the risk increases with age. African American men, for reasons still unknown, and men with a family history of prostate cancer are at highest risk for developing the disease and should begin getting checked at age 35.
Carney will hold two free prostate cancer screenings on Thursday, September 9, and Thursday, September 23, from 5:00-6:30 pm. The screening consists of two parts: a simple blood test called Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) and a digital rectal exam (DRE) performed by a urologist on the hospital’s medical staff. Since the 1980’s when prostate screening with the PSA was begun, the 5 year survival rate for men diagnosed with prostate cancer has risen dramatically from 75% to over 99%.The important factor to remember is that prostate cancer has practically no symptoms in the early stages of the disease. The only way to detect prostate cancer early and have a chance for survival may be an annual screening.
To register for the free prostate cancer screening, call the DoctorFinder Line at 1-800-488-5959, ext. 175. GET CHECKED. It could save your life.
