Free Shingles vaccine at Carney Hospital
By
Anyone who has ever had chickenpox is at risk for the development of shingles, although it occurs most commonly in people over the age of 60. Shingles is an outbreak of rash or blisters on the skin that is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox — the varicella-zoster virus.
It has been estimated that up to 1,000,000 cases of shingles occur each year in the U.S.
A new vaccine is available for the prevention of shingles in the elderly population and is recommended for use in people 60 and older. Carney Hospital has received a limited supply of the Zoster (shingles) Vaccine for those whose insurance does not cover the expense of this valuable preventative intervention.
The Shingles Vaccine Clinic will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am in the Ambulatory Care Center, Area A, basement level.
