A hearing on the $830 million sale of the Caritas Christi hospital system is set for the Local 103 IBEW Hall on Freeport St., according to state Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office. The July 1 hearing, the last one of six slated to be held in each of the communities affected by the sale, starts at 6 p.m.
Carney Hospital is located on Dorchester Ave. in between Lower Mills and Ashmont. The other hospitals in the system include St. Elizabeth’s in Brighton, Saint Anne’s in Fall River, Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Norwood Hospital, and Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. The hospital network is being acquired by Cerberus Capital Management LP.
The hearings start on June 8 at the Manthala George Jr. Elementary School in Brockton, and are followed by hearings at the Coakley Middle School in Norwood on June 16; Brighton High School on June 22; Bristol Community College in Fall River on June 24; and Tenney Middle School in Methuen on June 29. Testimony can also be sent to the attorney general’s office via email at firstname.lastname@example.org .
Along with support from the attorney general, the sale also needs sign-offs from the Vatican, the Supreme Judicial Court, and the state Department of Public Health. Coakley’s review will include a look at how the deal squares with applicable non-profit and charities law; procedural due care; management of conflict of interests; fair and reasonable compensation; and the public interest. The review process is expected to last several months.
If the sale is approved, $400 million will be spent across the system within four years of the deal’s approval, including $110 million in facility improvements that will allow the Caritas system to “provide state-of-the-art facilities to some of the poorest communities in Massachusetts,” according to a filing the system made with Coakley’s office. The improvements are expected to bring between 3,000 to 4,000 new construction jobs. Coakley’s office has set up a website for its review of the deal, located at: mass.gov/ago/caritas .
