Four days before the legislative panel tasked with redrawing the state’s district boundaries drops by Boston for a hearing, the City Council will take its own crack at the issue.
The council’s Committee on Census and Redistricting is set to hold a hearing on May 10 at 4 p.m. in Iannella Chamber. The committee is chaired by Bill Linehan (District 2). Councillor Mark Ciommo (District 9) is the vice chair, and other members include Councillor Maureen Feeney (District 3), Charles Yancey (District 4) and City Councillors At-Large John Connolly, Felix Arroyo and Ayanna Pressley. Feeney, of Dorchester, oversaw the process during the last redistricting effort in 2002.
The committee is charged with reviewing the results of U.S. Census figures and overseeing voter participation levels. Re-precincting, as the redrawing of the city’s voting precinct lines is known, is also under the committee purview.
The state-level redistricting effort, led by Sen. Stanley Rosenberg (D-Amherst) and Rep. Michael Moran (D-Brighton), is due in Boston on May 14 as part of its dozen or so hearings around the Bay State. That hearing is scheduled for the Lee Elementary School on Talbot Ave. in Dorchester at 10 a.m.
