A three-alarm fire that broke out around 3 a.m. on Tuesday at 40 Westwind Rd. [2] left an elderly man dead and sent four residents and one firefighter to the hospital, the Boston Fire Department [3] reports. Two MBTA buses were brought in to shelter other residents until they could return to their apartments or find alternate housing.
The fire, confined to a single fourth-floor apartment, did an estimated $250,000 in damage, the department says. The cause of the fire remains under investigation; an autopsy is planned on the dead resident.
The injured residents suffered smoke inhalation, the firefighter a shoulder problem, the department says.
