Two Dot breakfasts add to St. Pat's menu

A pair of first-time breakfasts slated for this weekend will help Dorchester revive its friendly rivalry with next-door South Boston as both neighborhoods tout their Irish roots for the St. Patrick's Day holiday.

On Saturday, a Saint Patrick's-themed breakfast to benefit the Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta food pantry will take place at C.F. Donovan's restaurant on Savin Hill Ave. at 10 a.m.. The event, hosted by a committee of locals led by New England Council president Jim Brett and Dr. Larry Ronan, is a ticketed event and is already sold out.

On Sunday, the Local 103 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is hosting a benefit breakfast at their Freeport Street campus. The sold-out fundraiser will feature an acoustic performance by Boston's own Irish punk rockers the Dropkick Murphys and run from 9 a.m. to noon.

All proceeds will be donated to My Brother's Keeper, a charity that delivers furniture, household items, and food to families in need across southern Massachusetts.

Shuttle buses will run from the JFK T stop to the I.B.E.W. hall beginning at 8 a.m., and the breakfast will wrap up in time for revelers to join the parade at 1 p.m.

Business manager Mike Monahan is hoping the fundraiser will become an annual alternative to the political laugh-in happening across town at the Massachusetts Convention Center in South Boston.

"They have their breakfast, and Dorchester has their own now," said Monahan. "This is more of a family event, and with the fundraiser it's going to have some purpose to it."

The big event of the day, South Boston's annual parade, starts at 1 p.m. on Broadway. Before the parade sets off, Senator Jack Hart will host the traditional South Boston breakfast and political roast at the Boston Convention Center, starting at 10 a.m. The Hart breakfast, also a ticketed event, will be televised on CW56 with a preview show starting at 9:30 a.m.

"I am really looking forward to this year's breakfast," said Senator Hart in a statement. "In continuing the tradition, we have a great representation of Massachusetts elected officials who will be there . . and possibly some surprise visitors from the national political scene. "

Musical entertainment at the Southie breakfast will include a former American Idol contestant and local Irish dancers, as well as a special appearance by renowned Irish tenor Emanuel Lawlor.
