Issues set off sparks in second mayoral debate

State Rep. Marty Walsh’s union ties and City Councillor At-Large John Connolly’s background as an attorney were an early focus of the second televised debate between the two mayoral candidates as they scrapped with each other two weeks before the Nov. 5 election.

The debate opened with Margery Eagan, who co-moderated the WGBH-sponsored debate with Jim Braude, pointing out that an independent, pro-union group had sent out a flyer slamming Connolly as a “son of privilege.” Said Walsh: “When I heard that piece went out, I was very upset about it,” adding that he put out a statement condemning the flyer and personally called Connolly.  Read more

Latest poll shows dead heat in Mayor's race

Rep. Martin Walsh of Dorchester has shrunk his opponent’s lead in the mayoral race to within the margin of error, as Boston City Councilor John Connolly of West Roxbury edged Walsh in a recent poll, 41-39.

The numbers were closer - 35-34 - when the 503 likely voters were polled on their initial preference and not pressed to say which candidate they were leaning towards.  Read more

13 days to Nov. 5. City Councillor At-Large John Connolly will hold an 11 a.m. press conference on City Hall Plaza focusing on negative mailers. An independent labor-backed group supporting state Rep. Marty Walsh has put out mailers slamming Connolly as privileged; Walsh has called on them to stop. The mailer issue and Walsh's background as a labor leader came up in last night’s debate at WGBH’s Brighton headquarters.  Read more

14 days to Nov. 5. Tonight: The second televised debate between the two finalists at WGBH. The debate, which will have a live audience, will air at 7pm on WGBH 2, 89.7 WGBH, and on WGBHnews.org. Jim Braude and Margery Eagan are the moderators. Starting at 1 p.m., State Rep. Marty Walsh and City Councillor At-Large John Connolly will also talk environmental issues at a forum put together by the Environmental League of Massachusetts. Tomorrow: WBUR/MassINC poll on the mayoral race will be released in the morning.  Read more

Marty Walsh and City Councillor At-Large John Connolly will make endorsements the focus of their respective press conferences this morning: Walsh will tout Congressman Michael Capuano's backing, while Connolly will have Bishop John M. Borders, III and Robert Lewis, Jr. The Connolly campaign will hold a "Women for Connolly" event tonight, which has a host committee that includes attorney Cheryl Cronin, former Deval Patrick adviser Lora Pellegrini and Micho Spring, a deputy mayor under the late Kevin White.  Read more

18 days to Nov. 5. City Councillor At-Large John Connolly will privately meet with gang members and anti-violence workers from StreetSafe Boston in Roxbury. The meeting will be followed by a walk through the area. State Rep. Marty Walsh meets with Haitian community leaders at Sant Belvi and hits a golf tournament reception in South Boston.  Read more

19 days to Nov. 5. State Rep. Marty Walsh and City Councillor At-Large John Connolly both appear in front of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce this morning at the Fairmont Copley Plaza. Walsh will then campaign with City Councillor At-Large Felix Arroyo in Hyde Park, while Connolly holds a press conference on his proposal for a Roxbury Entrepreneurship Center. Connolly will be joined by campaign co-chair Val Hyman, a DJ, Greg Selkoe of Karmaloop, Darryl Settles of D’Ventures Limited, and Clayton Turnbull, president of Waldwin Group, among others.  Read more
