Carney mourns loss of beloved Doctor Carlos Carpena

Dr. Carlos Carpena, who died April 21 at the age of 67, will be remembered by his family, friends, patients, colleagues, and students, as a man of great compassion, expertise, and humility.

He was "caring, truly interested in his patients and their families," said Cornelius P. Bulman, Chief Operating Officer of Caritas Carney Hospital. Bulman had known him since Carpena was a resident at Carney in 1973.  Read more

Bulger to join Carney as senior advisor

William M. Bulger, the former president of UMass and the Massachusetts State Senate, will bring his potent rolodex and fundraising prowess to Dorchester this summer, joining Caritas Carney Hospital as a Senior Advisor to the hospital's foundation.

The move, announced Wednesday by hospital president Dr. Daniel H. O'Leary, comes as Carney prepares to move from the control of the Archdiocesan-controlled Caritas Christi Health Care system to a new owner, Ascension Health, a national Catholic chain.  Read more

Executives from Ascension Health, the national health care company that has entered into an agreement with the Archdiocese of Boston to purchase the Caritas Christi Healthcare system that includes Dorchester's Carney Hospital, met with Carney administrators and board members at a meeting on Monday evening to explain their organization's mission and answer questions on Carney's role under new ownership.  Read more

The Archdiocese of Boston is negotiating an agreement to sell the Caritas Christi Health Care system &endash; including Dorchester's Carney Hospital &endash; to Ascension Health, a national Catholic non-profit provider based in St. Louis, Mo.

Carney Promises No Change in Service, Despite New Fees

Patients with Blue Cross health plans who go to the Caritas Carney Emergency Room for treatment will not experience any changes in their care despite a payment dispute between the ER doctors and the insurance company, the Dorchester hospital promised. "This will not impact patient care, treatment or coverage," said Patrice McCune a spokeswoman for the Caritas hospital system.  Read more

Bringing Her Medicine Back to Dorchester: Anne Rogal Returns to Carney

Many of her former patients at the Neponset Health Center will be glad to learn that Dr. Anne P. Rogal is setting up shop at the Caritas Carney Hospital after a four-year sabbatical from the area.

"This is kind of a coming home story," the affable Rogal said. "I did my residency here from 1985 to 1988 and then settled in at the Neponset Health Center. I have been connected with Dorchester for a long time."  Read more
